Recent Programs 2011-2012

Noted economist, Dr. Eugene Stanaland recently spoke to the Kiwanis Club of
Opelika at a regular meeting at the Saugahatchee Country Club. Dr.
Stanaland talked about the current state of the economy and gave his insight
on the future. Yetta Samford arranged the program, introduced the speaker,
and presented the Kiwanis bell.

Auburn University Baseball Head Coach, John Pawlowski recently spoke to the members of the Kiwanis Club of Opelika at a regular meeting at the Saugahatchee Country. Coach Pawlowski gave an update on the 2012 team and allowed members to ask questions. He also talked about new equipment changes that will affect the game. Coach Pawlowski was assisted by Scott Duvall, director of baseball operations and Assistant Coach Ty Megahee. Club treasurer Dr. Bob Huskey arranged the program.

Probate Judge Bill English recently spoke to the members of the Kiwanis
Club of Opelika at a regular meeting at the Saugahatchee Country Club. He
gave a two-fold program: termite damage at the Courthouse, and the upcoming
elections. He explained how the termite damage was discovered and the
efforts that have been made to exterminate them and repair the building. He
also gave an overview of the upcoming Election cycle and the various
positions that will be on the 2012 ballot. Temple Anderson arranged the
program, introduced the speaker, and presented the Kiwanis pens.

Lee County Sheriff, Jay Jones recently spoke to the members of the Kiwanis
Club of Opelika at a regular meeting at the Saugahatchee Country Club. He
gave statistics of what the 158 members of the Sheriff's Department will
handle in an average week as they patrol the 616 square miles of Lee County.
Examples include 200 investigations, 851 calls to meet with someone about an
issue, 572 transport issues, 56 arrests, 203 Incident/Offense Reports, 120
people booked, 25 federal prisoners detained, 5 Evictions, 50 bonds
processed, 109 warrants served, and 243 civil actions served. Reports can
now be handled online by visiting www.leecountysheriff.org . John Rice
arranged the program, introduced the speaker, and presented the Kiwanis pen
set.

Coach Sonny Smith Former AU Basketball coach
Former Auburn University Basketball Coach Sonny Smith recently spoke the the members of the Kiwanis Club of Opelika at a regular meeting at the Saugahatchee Country Club. Coach Smith talked about the differences in college basketball from the era he coached to present. Club member Charles Whatley arranged the program.

Thursday, April 19, 2012 was observed as Holocaust Remembrance Day as established by the United States Congress. Local Holocaust Survivor and club member Henry Stern presented a program on the Holocaust on this special day. He reflected on his past and told of his efforts to locate information on family members. Club member Charles Whatley arranged the program.

The BigHouse Foundation was the recipient of the Kiwanis Club of Opelika's major club project donation for 2012. Michah Melnick, the founder and director of this organization received a check for $8045.00 from the club. The BigHouse is a Christ-centered non-profit organization in Opelika, AL dedicated to meeting the needs and improving the quality of life of children in foster care.

Freedom Home Care Operations Manager Stephanie Birmingham and Business Development Manager Sean McClain recently presented a program to the members of the Kiwanis Club of Opelika at the Saugahatchee Country Club. They spoke of the juggling of life’s challenges and the fact that few people plan for care in later years. They explained that care wants are just as important as care needs as you age. They reviewed care options and costs, which include out of pocket, Medicaid, long term care, and VA benefits. David Jones arranged the program, introduced the speaker, and presented the Kiwanis bell.
