Gary Jones

Col. Gary Jones (ret. U.S. Army), Executive Vice President for Military Affairs with Columbus Chamber of Commerce, gave a Ft. Benning (BRAC) growth update to the members of the Kiwanis Club of Opelika. “The Valley Partnership” provides surrounding counties in Alabama and Georgia with economic development growth planning. Ft. Benning growth estimates expect 4712 new military personnel, 1889 civilians, 4802 contractors, and 6800 new school age children. Two million dollars per day is spent on construction at Ft. Benning. Over 4.3 billion dollars per year is added to the region by Ft. Benning and that figure will increase to 5.9 billion when BRAC is complete. Over 20,000 people are coming to the area and a large number will reside in Lee County. Only 30% actually reside on base, so most settle in the following counties: Muscogee, Lee, Russell, and Harris. Check out the plan for each county at www.fortbenningandthevalley.com Jack Warren arranged the program, introduced the speaker, and presented the Kiwanis pens.
